A Little History of This Bag Design

Ellie has been making bags for 18 years through her messenger bag company RE Load Bags. This bag is actually a discontinued RE Load design reimagined. Over the years bag designs have come-and-go, but this bags has remained constant as our favorite everyday bag. That is why we are stoked to offer the Upcycled Sailcloth Backpack in a limited run of 10 bags to you.

On Limited Runs

All of our product runs tend to be extremely limited, because they are constrained by our access to materials. In the case of this bag, Ellie procured an old sail from a local sailmaker in Portland, OR, and Dustin only painted one canvas for the pockets on this bag. We were only able to get 10 pockets out of this hand-painted canvas, so hence, a limited run of 10 backpacks was possible. We hope you enjoy these bags as much as we do.

On Creative Re-Use

As makers with a commitment to the DIY lifestyle, we are always looking to re-purpose materials from the waste-stream. Back when we lived in Seattle, and Dustin was still getting Cadence off the ground, we procured an old discarded sail from down by the docks in Seattle's waterfront.  We made several frame pads & bags out of it after Dustin painted it as a huge canvas. Dustin also made himself a parka. Since then, we have been wanting to get our hands on another sail, so when the opportunity arose here in Portland, we jumped on it. Stay tuned for more re-used sailcloth products lovingly made by our hands.
