Few things are as rewarding as learning an actual trade or skill. Ellie Lum is one of the best teachers I've ever met. Her passion for sewing and teaching others her craft is inspiring and helps to build confidence in even the most uncoordinated chickens that fear the sewing machines needles.

I recently attended the Portsmith Canvas Tote bag class. It was loads of fun and I walked out with a beautiful, completed bag. Ellie's instructions were organized and clear. She has a great ability to support all skill levels. Her assistant Katie was also very skillful & helpful. The work space was beautiful and functional. I am already planning to take more classes at Klum House. Thank-you so much!

I really enjoyed the sewing class I took with Ellie. She is an incredible teacher who is patient, really takes the time to make sure you understand every step and why you do things, and has a strong interest in helping you succeed.

I loved the location of the class, it is extremely convenient and is also a great creative environment to be in. She gave me the confidence to take on more projects and just try things! I am now working on so many projects at home and with the skills she taught me, am able to make some pretty cool stuff that I never would have thought I could make!

— Caitlin M.

Ellie is the best teacher. I found her while looking for ways to learn introductory skills for sewing, leather work, etc. and both of the classes I have taken have been perfect for that.  She is fun, to boot.  Highly recommend KLUM HOUSE and the doors it opens for newbies to the making world! :)

I travelled to Portland (from California), to take two classes:  the Crash Course Sew, and the Design and Sew Overlook Tote. Ellie offers a special combination of designer aesthetics (I'm so elated to be carrying away beautiful products expressly designed by her for class), business experience, and a passion for teaching. It is truly unique and worth traveling for!!! Klum House itself is a well-appointed space with a wonderful sense of community, and in a cool area -- offering a great introduction to Portland's maker culture. Thank you for the invaluable experience, Ellie and Klum House!

I took the Oberlin Canvas + Leather Tote class, and I was beyond impressed.  I came into class with little to no sewing experience, and left with an impressive finished bag about 5 hours later. It was kinda unbelievable! This is a true testament to the thoughtfulness of the class project...and the expertise of the Ellie, the instructor.

Coming into the class, I had no idea Ellie had been a professional bag maker for over 15 years (I didn't really read the site description apparently)...but her expertise definitely showed. We weren't just rushed through motions of completing the project in some haphazard way, but Ellie took the time to explain why the bag was designed a certain way. Hearing about her design decisions definitely increased my appreciation for the art of bag design and production. Her attention to detail made this almost feel like an intermediate/advanced class...but I definitely enjoyed it even as a beginner. Mad props to revealing so many trade techniques over a 5 hours period...picked up a lot of practical skills I'd probably use often.

Overall, super fun and enriching class. It was well paced, and I appreciated the thoughtfulness around the coffee and snack breaks. There were several other students taking the class, no one fell behind, everyone finished around the same it...another testament to how organized the class is.

It was a perfect entry to a new hobby.

Lydia did a fantastic job teaching the class and left me really looking forward to parts two and three. She was a great teacher, and I'm a former teacher, so I would know - teaching is hard! Lydia's approach made the information quite accessible and helped me establish a solid foundation such that I feel quite confident and excited about tackling the projects we have ahead of us.

I took the Sew Like A Boss workshop yesterday. I definitely feel MUCH more confident! I was easily able to create another bag at home with all the skills I have learned. The instructors were so supportive and thorough. Thank you!!

— Brittany M.

Ellie hosted my crew of employees for a Shibori workshop and we are still talking about it almost a year later! The instruction was excellent and the atmosphere was fun and easy. She is professional, friendly, and everything you'd want in a great teacher. I'd recommend @klumhouse wholeheartedly!

— Liz Brooks

I took the sew like a boss class and it was AWESOME! Ellie is an excellent teacher and I walked out of there with the Woodland Dopp kit and Portsmith tote, both of which I actually made and they look goooooood. Walk in a newbie and leave hooked!
