    • Portland has a solid public transportation system if you’d like to take that route. There are TriMet busses and MAX light rail lines that can take you all over the place. Bag Making + Sewing

I have a specific question about bag making, can you help me?

Check out our blog page for tips and tricks on how to choose leather and hardware, fix broken rivets, box corners, etc. If you’re looking for more specific guidance, consider booking a private lesson for more 1-on-1 help.

Do I need an industrial sewing machine to make your patterns?

No! All of our bag patterns are designed to be sewn on a home sewing machine.

Can my sewing machine handle making your patterns?

The best way to tell if your machine can handle sewing something is to try it! Does the motor have enough power to push the needle through the layers of fabric? Sometimes we have to use the handwheel to do a manual stitch through a construction step where two seams are joining, but generally, we see lots of different home sewing machines come through our teaching studio that do just fine sewing our patterns. Basically, if your sewing machine can’t make a good solid stitch though the layers of canvas without breaking a needle, shredding the thread, skipping stitching, refusing to feed the fabric through, and losing tension, then it might not be up to the challenge. In the Klum House home teaching studio, we teach all our classes on Singer Heavy Duty 4423 sewing machines that are generally only $110-$150 retail. That is to say that you don’t need a fancy or expensive sewing machine to make Klum House patterns.

Can you recommend some heavy duty sewing machines?

Yes! We wrote a whole blog post on it. Access our Heavy Duty Sewing Machine Buying Guide here.

How should I clean and care for waxed canvas?

Avoid ironing waxed canvas, as the wax will melt. Waxed canvas can simply be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Waxed canvas is naturally weather resistant and will develop its own patina with time.
