Klein + Lum = Klum

In 2015, together with her husband, Dustin Klein, Ellie Lum founded Klum House out of a modest home in Portland, Oregon, that encompasses their personal studios, a sewing classroom, a wood shop, and Dustin’s tattoo studio—plus, a bit of home for themselves and their little wonder dog, Winston. Dustin & Ellie are longtime creative entrepreneurs with roots in the cycling culture. Dustin Klein is founder of Cadence lifestyle cycling apparel & Ellie is founder of RE Load Bags, a custom handmade cycling bag company.

There’s tea and snacks and music and a tiny dog to sit on your lap and keep you company while you learn to sew.

Originally founded as a sewing education and handcrafted goods brand, Klum House quickly grew to emphasize their unique sewing workshops rooted in Ellie’s bag making & teaching skills. Over the next couple of years, Klum House built a following with those seeking high quality sewing and handcrafted goods education. People came from all over the country to take classes specializes in rugged and utilitarian sewing techniques and bag-making. Klum House’s reputation for high-quality education is rooted in the insights Ellie gained as an educational researcher, combined with her years of experience manufacturing bags and running a handmade business.

In 2017, Klum House moved to a beautiful split-level commercial space on N. Williams with high ceilings, natural light, and plenty of room for all of their industrial sewing machines. They wanted to preserve the laid-back coziness of Klum House's previous home studio and create a space that feels welcoming, inspiring, and dynamic, with plenty of space for making and all of the necessary tools at your fingertips. This move marked an exciting new phase in the life Klum House and a chance to expand their mission of helping more people take their creative skills the next level— whether that means taking a little time out to work with your hands, or learning industrial sewing to build your own handmade business.
