"Ellie is casually professional, you can tell she knows her shit but still has a relaxed attitude. I also enjoyed that she will let you try a few times first before stepping in. I felt comfortable and confident that I could complete the project after her thorough explanation and demonstration." — Brian Hanley
"Ellie is such an encouraging teacher and clear as a bell in her instruction. She broke complex information down into understandable bits, and explained the why's as much as the how's."
— Katelyn MacKenzie
"Where to begin! This is such a special and welcoming place, especially to someone with no previous sewing experience. Ellie made the learning process super easy and her dedication to the craft and love of teaching really shined through. The class and guidance was thoughtful, enlightening, entertaining, and at the end I left knowing how to use a sewing machine and with something I made myself! How rad is that? I couldn't recommend this experience more and I can't wait to go back myself for another class!"
— Ben Adams
"Ellie is so warm & welcoming! I'm pretty shy & I was nervous about taking a group class, but it was really fun! Ellie is patient with mistakes or problems & I feel like I learned a little about troubleshooting when working with heavy fabrics. I love that I came how with a finished product. And that her dog Winston hung out with us!"
— Cheryl Farris
"I liked how Ellie already had an agenda in place for the class, but was flexible with our questions. She has a great welcoming personality which works well for us 'new-to-sewing' types that may feel a bit overwhelmed getting started. I liked her style so much and learned so much that I signed up for more classes. Thank you Ellie!" — Jen Grossman
"I liked that the class was small, so I was able to ask questions. I loved that there were choices in color & snaps! I'm so happy I can thread a sewing machine now!"
— Desiree Montoya, Waxed Canvas Bag Student
"It was so nice to connect with other creative/DIY/Makers/Problem-Solvers! The creative experience, and being an entrepreneur, can be isolating work. Hearing the wide variety of experiences from others is so encouraging!
— Becky Newman, Makeshifter Canvas Works
"I thought the Vision/Mission workshop was wonderful and I really enjoyed Ellie's teaching style. Her dedication to bringing people together and creating a safe and inclusive environment for people to learn , create, and share —was inspiring!"
— Eden Swartz, Photographer
"I really liked the environment, ease, and small class. It felt like it could have been a personal class. Ellie's also really great at going slow and explaining everything thoroughly."
— Caitlin, sewing student
Reflection On The Driving Force workshop: "Until today, I had a hard time seeing my brand as more than my artistic practice but now have a real mission and vision for how I want my work to live in others' lives."
— Jessica Necor, Surface Designer/Bag Maker
"Getting personalized help and feedback was really wonderful. With the small class sizes, I really learned a lot. Ellis is patient and really helps me understand how and why we are doing things certain ways, so it's easier to replicate the bag on my own. Plus it's AWESOME to go home with a finished project."
— Courtney Bailey
"[The BYOB Driving Force: Write a Vision + Mission Statement workshop] was structured in terms of time and activities, but open-ended in answers. It was collaborative and safe for sharing ideas. I normally am shy in groups but felt very open and willing to share here."
— Lauren Hackett, Bosque Design
The projects Ellie taught at our Intro To Sewing course we're the perfect introduction to sewing. They had the perfect level of difficulty where I felt challenged but not discouraged. It was great that they were useful too! As a visual learner, watching Ellie complete the project first then recite the steps back to her was the perfect way to fully understand what I was doing. She finds ways to make the steps "stick" whether it's by word or visual association.
— Ashley Brandl, Intro To Sewing Student
"After completing Ellie's sewing class, I feel a lot more confident. I've always been afraid to touch a sewing machine— Now I feel like I can tackle some projects. I really feel like I have a basic understanding of sewing now."
— Jayne Liu, Photographer, Handcrafter, Website Guru
I had previously taken a few basic/introduction sewing classes, but after having met and worked with Ellie, I realize that my previous instructor was pretty crappy. Ellie was extremely thorough with her instruction and spoke to us in a way that we could all understand. I especially liked Ellie's demeanor. She is a chill girl and so easy to talk to and get along with. Anyone looking into taking a beginning sewing class should heavily consider Ellie as the instructor. I know I'm looking forward to taking future classes with her.
— Jesse, Sewing Student
I loved Ellie's collaborative style. If someone suggested a different way of making/doing something she would say, "let's try it." She is a great leader. You can tell she knows her stuff but never used that to act above anyone or came across as a, "know it all." She made learning fun. She made everyone's needs important, and gave everyone some 1 on 1 time.
— Mary Riedel, Sewing Bootcamp Student
She is my favorite workshop teacher! She is very approachable and patient. She made a potentially stressful class care free and dare I saw easy! I just bought my first sewing machine and am excited to build upon the lessons she taught me. I can't wait for her next new sewing class!
— Amanda Lane, Intro to Sewing Student
Overall, Ellie was patient, encouraging and intuitive. I really appreciated that Ellie first took the time to show us, step by step what we were learning, took the time to be sure we understood and asked us to repeat the steps back to her, before we sat down to do it on our own. When I made a mistake, she suggested I just leave it and continue on, but she could tell I preferred to start over and she encouraged me to do what made me happy with the final product rather than what she would do. She was laid back and free with praise. She was very aware that everyone has different learning styles which is rare to find.
— Justine Berkowicz, Sewing Student
Ellie was easy to understand, spoke in terms that a beginner like me could comprehend and generally wonderful to learn from. She established herself as a sewing expert, so I knew I was learning from the best. Ellie stopped for questions and genuinely wanted to impart knowledge.
— Kathleen McKinnon, Sewing Student
Ellie is a rare and refreshing educator. I marvel constantly at her effortless ability to express genuine appreciation for each and every individual she encounters. Her straightforward pragmatism is underpinned by deep kindness. I greatly appreciate not only the gentle affirmations she consistently radiates, but also the fact that she's incredibly well-prepared to tackle everything she commits herself to. She gives herself wholly to everything she does, and her energy and enthusiasm are utterly contagious.
Ellie is not only very intuitive, but is also genuinely concerned with the mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical thriving of the people around her. She never fails to check in with each and every student, and tirelessly devotes her time and energy to offering whatever form of support people need. She has encouraged and inspired me to pursue the holistic health she teaches through her own practice of life. The compassion she extends to herself is an open invitation to those around her to do the same.
— Kristian Kim, Food & Justice Storytelling Student
She's super thorough. Ellie knows common pain points and addresses them in a fun way (ie teaching her what she just taught us, asking questions, reminders (foot down!). She's very approachable. I loved that she gave variations on projects to students that moved faster than others without compromising her attention to students that needed more help. GREAT TEACHER.
