How to Tie a Slip Knot - Klum House

How to Tie a Slip Knot

Tying a slip knot is a quick way to make any leather strap adjustable without hardware. This technique is used when making the Alberta Crossbody Tote Pattern, and it gives you endless styling options—wear your bag high across your chest, low at your hip, or as a chic waist bag. Use this video tutorial to see exactly how to tie the slip knot for your strap.

How to Make Your Crossbody Strap Adjustable Without Hardware

  1. Take one end of the leather strap and thread it through the leather tab on one side of your bag. Tie a simple knot to secure the strap, leaving a 1–2" tail.
  2. Loop the opposite end of the strap up through the leather tab on the other side of your bag from outside to inside, making sure there are no twists in your strap.
  3. Working with a generous amount of strap length, tie a slip knot by looping the tail end of the strap around the main strap, forming a knot that can easily slide up or down for adjusting.
  4. Trim any excess strap ends with scissors or a rotary cutter, cutting at an angle and leaving about 1–2" past each knot.
  5. Adjust the slip knot to customize the strap length to comfortably fit your body.
